5 Debunked Plumbing Myths
Many homeowners consider plumbing problems an emergency service, to which there are numerous plumbing myths that some homeowners believe will prevent them from seeking out help even when they’re aware of the problem. Check out these five plumbing myths that cause more harm than good.
Myth #1: The Garbage Disposal Can Handle Anything
This couldn’t be farther from the truth! Garbage disposals aren’t supposed to be treated like garbage cans. While only meant to grind up leftover food waste, most garbage disposals can’t handle breaking down things like eggshells and potato skins. A good rule of thumb to follow is if you can’t chew it, neither can your garbage disposal.
Myth #2: A Leaky Faucet Isn’t a Big Deal
Not only is it going to run up your water bill, but it can also corrode your faucet and fixtures. This can wreak havoc on your kitchen by introducing mold, rust, and other problems that could be avoided. If you notice a leaky faucet, it’s best to call us ASAP!
Myth #3: If Water Goes Down the Drain, Then Everything’s Okay
Just because everything looks fine at the surface doesn’t mean there aren’t problems brewing in the pipes below. Sometimes food particles can slowly start to gather in the pipes which many homeowners never notice. If you notice your sink is slow to drain or makes a “glugging” noise, this could be a sign of a problem soon.
Myth #4: Toilets Can Be Used as a Garbage Disposal
Beware of those wipes that say “flushable” on the package and DON’T flush them! Even though they go down the drain just like toilet paper, they don’t break down nearly as easily. These wipes have the potential to back up your entire plumbing system – don’t waste your money.
Myth #5: It’s Okay to Put Hot Grease Down the Drain Because It’s Liquid
Whatever you do, DON’T do this! Sure it may sound like an easy solution after cooking, but this is one of the quickest ways to cause plumbing issues. You can avoid this by wiping out the grease with a paper towel and throwing it away.
